Ledcrieff & Lairds Fishing Report – w/e 30th October 2016

It was a welcome brief return to late summer conditions this week on the lochs. With high pressure dominating and keeping the weather mild and calm, it was back to the floater and intermediate for one last burst of quality surface action.

Yesterday seen the tempreature peak at 16 degrees mid day and due to this, combined with little wind, there was a great hatch of flies on the water. I sat in the bottom corner watching the rise, which gave me a good indication of what surface sport anglers will experience next summer. I was also covered in midges also which is a first for late October.

As for the coming week, temperatures will be dipping to the more seasonal norm with the winds (albeit fairly light) swinging round to the north. Given the great shelter we have a ledcrieff, this will not effect the fishing too much. Wrap up warm and bring your intermediates!!!

As far as tactics are concerned, dries, sedgehoggs and floating fry were catching well over the last few days as was the hot head damsel and any other fry imatations. Looking forward, If you want to catch good baskets, depth is the key as fish are generally sitting at around 3-4 feet when the wind is cooler. Fry imitations over the weedbeds will do the trick and will buzzers.

Notable catches over the last week include a 7lb brown (returned) and 8lb blue along with plenty fish in the 5-6lb range. We will be stocking again with the usual variety of species and sizes to keep things interesting and lively. One last note, a few browns have been unwittingely killed over the last week, can I remind all anglers, that all brown trout are to be returned on both lochs.

The hut now has it’s new wood burner which will be a warm welcome in the coming weeks. We now also have a range of cans, water, crips and sweets available. I have also bought in Red Bull, Lucozade & San Pelegrino. There will be complimentary hot snack available at the weekends also.

For those wanting to try their hand at fly fishing, we offer coaching (booking required) and we also do group bookings where we will throw in the BBQ and a photographer. Fire me an email at info@ledcrieff.co.uk for full details.

Remember, we are open ’til dark 7 days a week.

See you on the water,

Tight Lines!!
